Smirnoff | 1968

1968 Spanish magazine ad for Smirnoff vodka. A blond man laughing loudly, in a tall dark Cossack-style hat and an orange tunic, crosses his arms holding a glass in one hand and a bottle of Smirnoff vodka in the other. Headline “vodka Smirnoff acepta cualquier desafío..!” and a short text on the left.

“Vodka Smirnoff acepta cualquier desafío”: Smirnoff vodka takes on any challenge. In 1968, a laughing man in a Cossack-style hat and tunic held a glass and a bottle: “Mix Smirnoff with whatever you like. It doesn't matter. It will always improve it… Or drink it on its own.”

The costume points to the brand's origins: Pyotr Smirnov founded his vodka distillery in Moscow in the 1860s. After the 1917 revolution the family emigrated and the name was spelt Smirnoff; the American rights were sold in the 1930s, and the brand grew in the United States as a neutral spirit for mixing.

That is the idea here: vodka as an easy base for cocktails, still a novelty in Spain in the 1960s.

Smirnoff now belongs to the British group Diageo. Today, advertising rules for alcohol would not allow a promise to “improve” any drink.
