Sanyo | 1968

“¡Ooooh! Asombroso Sanyo”: amazing Sanyo. In December 1968, Sanyo introduced to Spain its large 23-inch television, “the first large Japanese television in Spain”, for 17,490 pesetas including tax. The magazine itself cost 30 pesetas.
Sanyo was founded in Osaka in 1947 by Toshio Iue, brother-in-law of Kōnosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic. It started with bicycle lamps and soon made radios and televisions.
The ad leans on a stereotype of the time, the “clever Japanese”, with a caricature of figures in a sailing boat watching a small TV. It also shows a turning point: Japanese electronics were beginning to reach European living rooms.
In 2009 Sanyo was taken over by Panasonic, and the brand gradually disappeared.
