“Los pisos ‘que se venden’ tienen calefacción Roca”: the flats “that sell” have Roca heating. In 1968, Roca spoke to Spaniards buying a flat in the new apartment blocks of the building boom, listing nine reasons for central heating with radiators.
Roca was founded in Gavà, near Barcelona, in 1917 by the Roca Soler brothers to make cast-iron radiators. It added boilers, then cast-iron baths in 1929 and porcelain sanitaryware in 1936.
The list says a lot about how many homes were heated then: a system that “gives off no fumes or smoke, does not burn the oxygen in the air” and is “safe for your children”. It burned almost anything, from town gas and butane to coal and firewood.
Today Roca is known worldwide for bathrooms, and the company is still Spanish-owned.
