Canon | 1968

1968 Spanish magazine ad for Canon cameras, black and white. A photo of several cameras on a table: a Canon Pellix reflex body, a Canonet QL17 rangefinder, a Canon Dial 35 and a lens with its caps. Headline “Haga maravillas con la óptica de Canon” and the Canon logo with the Spanish importer's address in Barcelona.

“Haga maravillas con la óptica de Canon”: work wonders with Canon optics. In December 1968, Canon showed Spanish readers a table of cameras and lenses: a Pellix reflex, a compact Canonet QL17, a Dial 35 and a Canon lens, “prodigies of optical engineering”.

Canon began in Tokyo in the 1930s with a prototype camera called Kwanon, after the Buddhist goddess of mercy; the name was later changed to Canon. In the 1960s Japanese cameras were winning over a market that German makers had long dominated.

One detail reveals the period: the Spanish importer, Focica, gave its address as Avenida Generalísimo Franco in Barcelona, today's Avinguda Diagonal.

“Retain your life with a Canon”: the promise of photography, then as now.
