Kyriazi Finas | 1959

1959 German magazine ad for Finas cigarettes by Kyriazi Frères. A huge black Arabic word spans the page, with the German translation “Die Edle”. Below, an ornate cigarette tin labelled Kyriazi Frères, Cairo (Egypt), established 1873, branch factory Hamburg, Finas, with one cigarette resting on it. Price 10 Pf, Cairo-Typ.

A huge word in Arabic, and below it the translation: “Die Edle”, the noble one. In 1959, the Finas cigarette, “Cairo type”, cost 10 pfennigs apiece.

The tin tells the story: Kyriazi Frères, Cairo (Egypt), established 1873, branch factory in Hamburg. The firm was founded in Cairo by Greek brothers and opened factories in Amsterdam and, in 1925, in Hamburg.

Oriental tobacco was a mark of refinement, and the exotic was part of the pitch: Arabic calligraphy and figures in Ottoman dress on the lid.

Kyriazi was taken over by British American Tobacco in the 1960s. Tobacco advertising left German magazines in 2007; today we know how much harm smoking does.
