HB | 1959

1959 German magazine ad for HB filter cigarettes, in black and white. A tall column of small HB pyramid logos with crowns runs down the page, from an open cigarette pack at the top to a large HB pyramid and an open wooden box of cigarettes at the bottom. Headline “Frohen Herzens genießen”.

“Frohen Herzens genießen”: enjoy with a happy heart. In 1959, HB was still a young brand, presented with the slogan it had used from the start: “a filter cigarette that tastes good”.

The name comes from Haus Bergmann, a Dresden cigarette factory taken over by British American Tobacco in the early 1930s. HB reached West German shops in 1955 and became one of the best-known cigarettes in the country.

In this ad we can see the HB pyramid with its crown repeated like a column down the page, and the cigarettes laid out in a wooden box, like fine cigars.

Tobacco advertising was banned from German TV in 1975 and from newspapers and magazines in 2007. Today we know how much harm smoking does.

Translation:
Enjoy with a happy heart
… a filter cigarette that tastes good
Fine taste and good tolerability are ideally combined in the HB. That is why the number of enthusiastic HB smokers is so large, and why HB wins new friends every day.
