“Das neue flot – jetzt noch besser!” In 1959, Schwarzkopf's flot hair cream contained something new: silicone, to give shine and protect the hairdo from humidity.

Schwarzkopf goes back to 1898, when the chemist Hans Schwarzkopf took over a drugstore in Berlin; the black head silhouette in the logo plays on his name, which means “black head”.

The ad works with insecurity: “Can your hair stand critical looks? You don't see your whole hairdo, but the others see it from all sides.” A tube cost 90 pfennigs, and for men there was “fit”.

Schwarzkopf has belonged to Henkel since 1995.
