Nivea | 1959

1959 German magazine ad for Nivea sun care, in black and white. A smiling young woman in a vest and shorts and a smiling young man with a checked towel sit back to back on sand beside a beach ball. Products in front: Nivea Spray, Nivea Ultra-Öl and a Nivea Creme tin. A comic strip on the left and a drawn sun on the right; slogan “… herrliches Nivea-Braun!”.

“1-2-3 … herrliches Nivea-Braun!” In 1959, Nivea proposed three steps to a perfect tan: Nivea-Creme to get used to the sun gradually, Nivea-Ultra-Öl for longer sunbathing, and Nivea-Spray, sold in a plastic bag, for strong sun.

Nivea Creme was launched in 1911 by Beiersdorf in Hamburg, and its blue tin is still on the shelves today.

In this ad we can see the ideal of the time: a tan as a sign of health, sport and holidays. The comic strip even teaches “Renate” to keep her first sunbaths to a few minutes.

Today we know that a tan is the skin reacting to damage, and sun creams are chosen by their protection factor, not by how brown they make us.

Text in the ad

Translation:
This is the right way:
Even the first minutes in the sun matter. Renate takes her first sunbaths either in small doses (a few minutes) with Nivea-Creme, or else … if she wants to stay in the sun longer straight away, she uses the more protective Nivea-Ultra-Öl. Sunbathing with Nivea-Spray is wonderfully easy.
1*-2**-3***…
*Nivea-Creme for getting used to the sun gradually; protects tanned skin from drying out. Especially for evening aftercare after air and sun.
**Nivea-Ultra-Öl, the skin-caring sun protection for stronger sun and for anyone who wants to tan quickly and stay in the sun longer straight away.
***Nivea-Spray, the skin-caring sun protection in a handy spray bottle in a plastic bag; protects the skin even in long and strong sun.
Nivea-Creme: DM 0.45; 1.00; 1.80 and 2.95 · Nivea-Ultra-Öl: DM 0.75; 1.20 and 2.50 · Nivea-Spray in plastic bag DM 5.00
… wonderful Nivea tan!*
*Nivea tan is a natural suntan. You stay brown even longer if every evening you give your skin, which tends to dry out from air and sun, some “aftercare” with Nivea-Creme. Nivea-Creme gives the skin what it needs: fat and moisture!
