Zeiss Ikon Contaflex | 1959

1959 German magazine ad for the Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super camera. Close-up black-and-white photo of two hands holding the silver single-lens reflex camera with a Tessar lens. At the top, a man in a suit looks through a camera. Text columns describe five innovations, a viewfinder diagram shows a bird, and the Zeiss Ikon logo sits at the bottom.

“In the viewfinder: subject + distance + exposure!” In 1959, Zeiss Ikon announced the Contaflex Super, “the five-times-new top camera”, at 597 marks.

After the division of Germany left its Dresden works in the East, Zeiss Ikon was rebuilt in Stuttgart. There it launched the Contaflex in 1953, a 35 mm single-lens reflex with a leaf shutter. The Super added a coupled light meter whose needle could be seen inside the viewfinder.

The ad speaks to the serious amateur: wide-angle and stereo pictures, close-ups at 1:1, telephoto attachments up to 400 mm, and a quick-wind lever.

Zeiss Ikon stopped making cameras in 1972. Today a phone checks subject, distance and exposure on its own.

Im Sucher: Motiv + Entfernung + Belichtung!
Die fünfmal neue Spitzencamera
Contaflex super

Translation:
In the viewfinder: subject + distance + exposure!
The five-times-new top camera
Contaflex super
The new CONTAFLEX model has truly earned the title “super”. Five fabulous innovations on the CONTAFLEX SUPER now make better photography even easier: you see the needle of the coupled light meter twice – in the viewfinder and on the outside of the body. With the new light-selector dial you set the exposure – while keeping the camera to your eye. In the ingeniously designed CONTAFLEX viewfinder you check the subject, the correct distance and the exact exposure – at a single glance. You now have even more photographic possibilities: wide-angle and stereo pictures, close-ups down to a scale of 1:1, telephoto attachments up to 400 mm (!) focal length. The rapid-wind lever and the rewind crank speed up shooting and film changes.
And of course the famous CONTAFLEX advantage: in the viewfinder of this best-selling single-lens reflex camera you see the real picture – large, brilliantly bright, the right way round, and exactly framed with every interchangeable lens!
CONTAFLEX – the camera for connoisseurs and experts
Further technical advantages: ZEISS TESSAR f/2.8, 50 mm · bayonet mount for interchangeable parts · dust-protected Synchro-Compur shutter up to 1/500 second, built in at the only optically correct position · two-magazine method for changing black-and-white and colour 24 x 36 mm film in daylight · removable back · The CONTAFLEX SUPER belongs to the very top class: not a camera for everyone – but a camera for you! CONTAFLEX SUPER DM 597 · CONTAFLEX RAPID, same features without light meter, DM 498
This is the decisive advantage: with one single glance through the viewfinder of the CONTAFLEX SUPER you check the subject, the distance and the exposure. The light-meter needle appears at the side – so it does not disturb the viewfinder image!
ZEISS IKON – one step ahead of progress
(Margin:) … colour or black and white, a ZEISS IKON film is worth it!
