Bauknecht | 1961

Vintage ad for Bauknecht, 1961

Sexist advertising in Germany. In 1961 Bauknecht ran this ad in the German women’s fashion magazine Constanze.

One look at the image, the headline and the sign-off is enough to see that an ad like this would be almost impossible today.

Headline: “The pride of the modern woman.”

Sign-off: “Bauknecht knows what women want.”

Text in the ad

Bauknecht weiß, was Frauen wünschen

Translation:
The pride of modern women…
Bauknecht appliances are modern in form, great in performance – always fairly priced.
…and Bauknecht appliances are sold only in reputable specialist shops with personal advice.
Bauknecht refrigerators are not “cheap”, but good value – they offer modern cooling comfort: full use of space, aroma protection, adjustable freezing, automatic defrosting.
Bauknecht fully automatic washing machines, with the proven two-lye process, wash 4 times automatically, as gently as the time-tested housewife’s way.
With the “Bauknecht” the housewife gets a reliable helper. Timeless, handsome, strong and dependable… these are the hallmarks of the Bauknecht food mixer.
Bauknecht knows what women want
