Vick Vaporub | 1959
Raise your hand if you’ve never used it! In 1890 Lunsford Richardson bought a pharmacy in a small town in North Carolina and began making ointments for colds and nasal congestion.
In 1905 he sold the pharmacy and founded Vick’s Family Remedies, and from 1911 he focused on Vicks VapoRub. In 1918 sales soared during the Spanish flu outbreak in the United States.
More than a century later, VapoRub is still a staple in homes everywhere, as this 1959 German ad shows, with a mother rubbing it on her son’s chest.
