Lufthansa | 1953

This page is not an ad, but it reads like one: “Die Lufthansa kommt wieder!” (Lufthansa is coming back!). Over Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel airport, eight aircraft fly in formation, four twin-engine Convair 340s and four Lockheed Super Constellations. The magazine admits it is “a picture of the future, conjured up by a photographic trick”: a montage.
In November 1953 West Germany had no airline. The old Deutsche Luft Hansa, founded in Berlin in 1926, had been wound up after the war. On 6 January 1953 a new company was set up in Cologne with a rather dry name, Aktiengesellschaft für Luftverkehrsbedarf (Luftag). It ordered exactly these eight planes and set up its maintenance base in Hamburg.
The timetable in the article proved optimistic. Luftag bought the old name and the crane logo in August 1954, but the first scheduled flights took off only on 1 April 1955, linking Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich. New York followed on 1 June 1955, with Super Constellations.
One line hints at the doubts: “Finanzierung macht Sorgen” (financing is a worry). For readers in 1953, the return of Lufthansa was a sign that the country was getting back on its feet.
Text in the ad

Lufthansa is coming back!
For now it is a picture of the future, conjured up by a photographic trick: over Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel airport, which will house the technical base of the new Lufthansa, four twin-engine Convair 340s and four four-engine Lockheed Super Constellations thunder past. The Aktiengesellschaft für Luftverkehrsbedarf has already ordered these eight aircraft from the American manufacturers. If the essential condition is met – that the Federal Republic soon regains sovereignty over its airspace – Lufthansa will open European services in July 1954 with four Convair 340s. In summer 1955 North Atlantic services will follow with four four-engine Super Constellations.
Start in summer 1954 – European scheduled services with four twin-engine “Convairs” · One year later: the leap across the Atlantic · Piston-engined “Super Constellations” for the new Lufthansa – financing is a worry
