Vintage ad for Siemens, 1958

German technology and innovation. Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske was founded in Berlin in October 1847 by Werner von Siemens, Johann Georg Halske and Johann Georg Siemens. A year earlier they had invented the pointer telegraph, which anyone who could read could use without knowing Morse code.

In 1853 Siemens & Halske began building a telegraph line in Russia that stretched 10,000 km, from Finland to Crimea. By the end of the 1850s the company had a branch in England.

In 1866 Werner von Siemens discovered the dynamo-electric principle, making large-scale power generation possible. The first electric railway came in 1879, and the first electric lift soon after, in Mannheim.

The list goes on, from early telephones and radio receivers to electric locomotives and electron microscopes, and on to household appliances that changed everyday life, like this electric shaver advertised in the German magazine ER in 1958.
