AGA | 1939

“L'eau chaude gratuite”: free hot water. In July 1939, the AGA cooker promised to cook, to use six times less fuel and, with a water tank on top, to supply water at 90 degrees for bath, toilet and washing-up. A bath cost about 40 centimes, with coal at 600 francs a tonne.
The AGA was invented in 1922 by the Swedish physicist Gustaf Dalén, winner of the 1912 Nobel Prize, who had lost his sight in an accident and designed it while at home. The name comes from his company, AB Gasaccumulator.
In France it was made under licence by the Rosières works in Bourges. Note the dream: hot water from the kitchen stove, in a time when many homes had none on tap.
AGA cookers are still made, mostly in Britain.

L'EAU CHAUDE GRATUITE
