Huiles Renault | 1939

“De puissants moyens de fabrication alliés à de sévères méthodes de contrôle ont fait des Huiles Renault les meilleures”: powerful means of production and strict testing made Renault oils the best. In July 1939, the ad showed no car at all, only tall storage tanks, pipes and rows of barrels, and a can marked “Aviation”.
Louis Renault and his brothers founded their car company in Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris, in 1899. By the 1930s the group also made trucks, aircraft engines and its own lubricants, through the Société anonyme des Huiles Renault in Issy-les-Moulineaux.
Industrial photography was itself the message: modern, controlled, French production.
After the Liberation, Louis Renault was arrested for collaboration and died in prison in 1944; the company was nationalised in 1945.
