Harriet Hubbard Ayer | 1939

1939 French magazine ad for Harriet Hubbard Ayer's Luxuria cream, black and white. At the top, a woman in profile with closed eyes holds roses against her neck; at the bottom, a jar of Luxuria cleanser beside a rose. Headline “Les hommes préfèrent d'abord un joli teint…” and text comparing skin to flowers.

“Les hommes préfèrent d'abord un joli teint…”: men prefer a pretty complexion first. In July 1939, Luxuria cream compared skin to flowers that fade without dew, and offered readers who mentioned Plaisir de France a free sample and a brochure, “Suivez-nous vers la beauté”.

The brand carried the name of a remarkable woman: Harriet Hubbard Ayer (1849–1903), from Chicago, who in 1886 founded one of the first American cosmetics companies run by a woman. In 1893 her family had her committed to an asylum; after her release she became a beauty columnist for the New York World. The company that later used her name was founded after her death.

The headline speaks for its time: beauty as something done for men's eyes.

The address in Paris and the cities New York, London and Montreal show how international beauty brands already were.

Text in the ad

Translation:
MEN PREFER, FIRST OF ALL, a pretty complexion…
Without moisture flowers fade… skin ages
Just as the petals of a flower cannot stay fresh without dew and rain, your skin needs moisture to stay supple and young. Myriads of tiny glands inside the skin nourish it with this precious moisture. But sun, wind, nervous tension and the years tend to dry the skin. Then blemishes and wrinkles appear, and the skin withers.
LUXURIA gives the face back its natural freshness
Important: if you mention Plaisir de France, you will receive a free sample of LUXURIA Cream together with our brochure no. 3, “FOLLOW US TOWARDS BEAUTY”. We are at your disposal to guide you and will give it our very best care.
