Darne | 1939

“Le fusil Darne”, a fixed-barrel shotgun with automatic ejectors, “of purely French invention and production”, monopolised “for more than 60 years” and protected by successive patents. In July 1939, Darne of Saint-Étienne set its engraved gun over a world map crossed by liners and a seaplane.
Régis Darne founded his gun works in Saint-Étienne, France's arms-making capital, in 1881. Unlike most shotguns, which “break” open, the Darne kept its barrels fixed and opened with a sliding breech.
The slogan claims the gun was “loved, appreciated, in service, in honour” on every hunting ground in the world, a reminder of the colonial hunting culture of the time.
The company was liquidated in 1979; the name was taken over by another Saint-Étienne gunsmith.
