Hanomag | 1930

1930 German magazine ad for Hanomag cars. A bold black-and-white drawing of a four-seat car with an open frame, showing a smiling woman in a cloche hat at the wheel, a man in a cap and a grey-haired man with glasses. Headline “Der behaglich-bequeme Viersitzer”, technical text, a price table and the Hanomag logo.

“Der behaglich-bequeme Viersitzer”: the cosy, comfortable four-seater. In 1930, Hanomag of Hannover-Linden launched two cars with the same body: one with a 16 hp, 800 cc engine for 2,825 Reichsmarks, and one with 20 hp and 1,100 cc for 2,950, with credit over up to 18 months.

Hanomag goes back to an iron foundry founded by Georg Egestorff in Linden in 1835 and made locomotives and tractors. Its first car, the 2/10 PS of 1925, was nicknamed “Kommissbrot”, army loaf, for its boxy shape.

The ad insists the cars are not mass products: “every single Hanomag is precision work”. In 1930 the brand was second in the German car market, behind Opel.

Hanomag stopped making cars in 1941; the Linden works closed after bankruptcy in 1983.
