Mars Staedtler | 1930

“Staedtler-Stifte seit 1662”: Staedtler pencils since 1662. In 1930, the Nuremberg firm showed only a pencil, a sharpener and a crescent moon, and relied on its age.
The date refers to Friedrich Staedtler, first recorded in Nuremberg as a pencil maker in 1662, when the local joiners' guild tried to stop him working. The company itself was founded by Johann Sebastian Staedtler in 1835, and the Mars brand, named after the Roman god of war, dates from 1900.
In the same magazine, its Nuremberg neighbour and rival Faber-Castell was also advertising (see Faber-Castell | 1930).
Staedtler still makes pencils in Nuremberg, and is now owned by a foundation.
