Leica | 1930

1930 German magazine ad for the Leica camera, black and white. A drawing of a smiling bald man with glasses raising a small camera in one hand, beside the script Leica logo and the words “Kleinfilmkamera Leica” and “Das kleine Photo-Wunder”. At the bottom: Ernst Leitz / Wetzlar.

“Das kleine Photo-Wunder”: the little photo marvel. In 1930, Ernst Leitz of Wetzlar advertised its Leica as a “Kleinfilmkamera”, a camera for small film, that let you work “efficiently and comfortably” with top-quality results.

The Leica had been presented at the Leipzig spring fair in 1925. Its designer, Oskar Barnack, had used 35 mm cinema film for still photos, and the name simply joins LEItz and CAmera.

The illustration shows what made it new: a camera small enough to hold in one hand and carry everywhere.

Leica cameras are still made in Wetzlar. The pocket camera of 1930 changed the way the world was photographed.
