Soennecken | 1930

“Ob 20 oder 2000 Bände”: whether 20 or 2,000 volumes. In 1930, F. Soennecken of Bonn sold “Ideal” bookcases built from separate, centrally lockable glass-fronted sections, so that a home library could grow book by book, in oak and in any colour.
Friedrich Soennecken, a blacksmith's son from the Sauerland, founded his firm in Remscheid in 1875 and moved it to Bonn a year later. He is credited with the lever-arch file and the two-hole punch, both from 1886, and from 1904 his company also made office furniture.
A growing bookcase says a lot about its time: books were a sign of education and status.
The firm went bankrupt in 1973, but the Soennecken name lives on in the office-supplies trade.
