Elise Gey | 1887

1887 German newspaper ad, text only, inside a decorative chain-link border. Headline “Junge Mädchen” in large type, followed by Gothic text offering board and lessons for 750 marks at Frau Elise Gey, Dresden, Rietschelstr. 5.

“Junge Mädchen” (young girls) “find motherly accommodation for further education”. In 1887, Frau Elise Gey, at Rietschelstraße 5 in Dresden, offered board and lessons in languages, sciences, music and more for a fee of 750 marks, with the best references.

This was a “Töchterpensionat”, a boarding house where middle-class daughters rounded off their education after school.

The ad reveals the limits of the time: a girl's education was meant to prepare her for marriage and home rather than a profession. German universities only began admitting women around 1900.

Behind the promise of motherly care was a world about to change.
