Wilhelm Bartsch | 1887

Wilhelm Bartsch was a “Tapezierer”, an upholsterer, at Steinstraße 39 in Bautzen. In 1887 he advertised his upholstered-furniture store, “from the simplest to the most elegant finish”, with prompt service and moderate prices.
The engraving shows a sofa typical of the time: button-tufted back, turned legs and a carved crest with a fan motif.
A piece like this belonged in the “gute Stube”, the best room in the house, kept for guests and Sundays.
Today we buy sofas flat-packed. In 1887, you went to the upholsterer in your own town.
