J. G. Schneider | 1887

A pocket watch fills half the ad. In 1887, J. G. Schneider, at Innere Lauenstraße 12 in Bautzen, next to the tower, promised a “colossal selection” of watches and clocks of all kinds, chains, and repairs “fast, cheap and with guarantee”.
The ad also lists “Berner Musikwerke, Ariston, Herophon”: music boxes and hand-cranked organettes that played punched cardboard discs, many of them made in Leipzig.
A watchmaker selling music machines made sense: both were small precision mechanics.
Repairs fast and cheap. In 1887, a watch was something you fixed, not something you replaced.
