Adolph Hentschke | 1887

Not every ad sells a pleasure. In 1887, Adolph Hentschke of Löbau, in Saxony, offered to make “Grabdenkmäler” (gravestones) of all kinds, in marble, syenite, serpentine and sandstone, and took on all stonemason's work for buildings.
His address says a lot: “am Friedhof”, right by the cemetery.
The list of stones also reveals a custom: a gravestone was a statement, and the choice of material said something about the family.
Between pianos and porcelain, this small ad reminds us that 19th-century readers planned, quite openly, for the end too.
Text in the ad
