Vintage ad for Gessy, 1953

Ads and contributors. This 1953 ad launched the new Gessy soap.

Gessy was created in Brazil by Italian immigrant José Milani, who in 1887 bought a small soap factory in the São Paulo countryside and gradually expanded production. In 1913 he launched Gessy soap, so successful that it gave its name to the company’s whole line of personal-care products.

The company moved into food and kept growing until 1960, when it merged with Unilever to become Gessy Lever.
