MMs | 1997

Vintage ad for MMs, 1997

During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Forrest Edward Mars is said to have seen soldiers eating small pieces of chocolate coated in a hard sugar shell that kept them from melting in the Spanish heat.

The idea was too good to miss. With his partner Bruce Murrie, Mars founded M&M’s Plain Chocolate Candies, named after the initials of their surnames.

Wars bring misery to millions and fortune to a few, and Mars and Murrie got the lucky side: from 1941, M&M’s became a favourite snack of American soldiers in the Second World War.

From then on M&M’s never stopped growing and is still a worldwide success.

This 1997 ad ran in the United States in the comic The Amazing Spider-Man.
