Anilana | 1974

“Ciepłe, eleganckie, praktyczne” (warm, elegant, practical): that is how this ad sold sweaters made of anilana “dla całej rodziny” (for the whole family). Anilana was a Polish acrylic fibre made in Łódź, the heart of the country’s textile industry.
It was produced at the Anilana synthetic fibre works, which began making acrylic fibre in the mid-1960s on a site where artificial fibres had been made since 1940. The sweaters came from two state knitwear factories: “Jarlan” in Jarosław and “Olimpia” in Łódź.
The copy lists the advantages: soft, crease-free, no felting, easy to wash and holding its shape. The prices were “przystępne” (affordable): from 200 to 360 złoty, in a year when the minimum monthly wage was raised to 1,200 złoty. A Japanese Yashica twin-lens camera completes the modern picture.
The ad appeared in Magazyn Rodzinny in December 1974, in the same issue as a Woolmark ad for pure new wool. The Anilana works stopped operating in the late 1990s, but acrylic is still in sweaters all over the world.
