Vintage ad for Dunlop, 1930

A vet, a child and a tricycle: that is how the first pneumatic tyre was born. In 1887 John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish vet, worried that his son was having an uncomfortable, bumpy ride on his tricycle’s wooden wheels. He wrapped the wheels in strips of rubber and inflated them with a football pump, creating the first pneumatic tyre.

In 1888 he founded the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Co. Ltd., and in 1890 opened his first tyre factory in Dublin. In 1893 came his first factory outside the UK, in Hanau, Germany.

Dunlop is considered the oldest tyre maker still in business. Today it belongs to the Goodyear group.
