Casa Carvalhaes | 1915

Vintage ad for Casa Carvalhaes, 1915

“Life in Belém is about as cheap as in the European capitals, and for food one finds everything available in any great capital of the world, domestic or foreign; there are even vegetables and fruit from cold climates, brought from Europe and North America in refrigerated chambers.” Álbum do Estado do Pará, 1908.

This 1915 ad from Belém captures that golden age, showing the beautiful façade of Casa Carvalhaes, founded in 1860 and now, sadly, part of the city’s history.

The text at the side confirms that Casa Carvalhaes received goods from Europe and America by steamship and stored them in its own cold rooms.
