Vintage ad for Cadillac, 1927

CADILLAC AUTOMOBILE COMPANY: that was the name given in 1902 to the company that would become an American automotive symbol.

Few know that Cadillac grew out of the Detroit Automobile Company, founded in 1899. One of its partners was Henry Ford, who left after disagreements with the investors.

The same investors, William Murphy and Lemuel W. Bowen, asked one of their suppliers to value the company so they could wind it up. They did not expect that supplier, Henry Martyn Leland, to talk them out of it and bet on the future of the car.

Leland, an engineer obsessed with precision, offered them a new engine, more powerful and more reliable than those of the time. Murphy and Bowen accepted and put him in charge of the new Cadillac Automobile Company, founded in August 1902.

The first Cadillac, designed by Leland himself, was launched that October. General Motors bought Cadillac in 1909 and still owns it.

With more than 115 years of history, Cadillac remains a byword for quality, luxury and innovation, and for decades has been the official car of US presidents.

This handsome ad ran in the Spanish magazine La Esfera on 4 June 1927.
