Studebaker | 1924

Advertising in tiles. There was a time when tiled advertising panels were more than ads: they were an art form. A living example is at number 9, Calle Tetuán, in Seville, Spain.
This panel was made in 1924 by the Viuda e Hijos de M.ª Ramos Rejano factory for the American car brand Studebaker. At the time the building housed the café-bar El Sport, a kind of English club where Seville’s high society met.
For decades the same space has been a jewellery shop, and the tiles are part of Seville’s cultural heritage.
On one of the city’s busiest streets and almost 100 years old, the tiles have suffered vandalism and wear and have been restored several times, most recently in 2017.
