Carlsberg | 1981

Vintage ad for Carlsberg, 1981

Founded in 1847 by Jacob Christian Jacobsen in Valby, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Carlsberg is named after Carl, the founder’s son, and berg (hill), after the hill where the brewery began.

In 1875 the company set up a laboratory to study fermentation, and in 1876 Jacob created the Carlsberg Foundation, which still supports research today. In 1882, after disagreements with his father, Carl opened his own brewery, Ny Carlsberg; the two were united under the Foundation in 1906.

The famous logo was drawn in 1904 by architect Thorvald Bindesbøll. In 1970 Carlsberg merged with its rival Tuborg.

The label on the can in this ad shows the beer was brewed in Spain under licence. It ran in 1981 in Selecciones, the Spanish edition of Reader’s Digest.
