Anis del Mono | 1922

Anyone who has visited Spain and its countless bars has probably seen Anís del Mono, one of the country’s best-known spirits. It is a case study in visual identity: since its founding in 1870 it has kept the same label and the same bottle.
The label, which has carried a spelling mistake from the very beginning, and the monkey with Charles Darwin’s face are just two of the anecdotes about this drink.
At Christmas, groups of young people sing traditional carols in the streets, and the ridged Anís del Mono bottle is often used as a percussion instrument.
This ad ran in 1922 in the Spanish magazine Blanco y Negro.
